Lectors assist during the liturgy by proclaiming the Word of God. Lectors read the Mass announcements and provide the name of the entrance song before they sit in the congregation, coming forward again at the appropriate time to read the 1st and 2nd Readings. They return to their seat and approach the ambo a third time to read the petitions in the Prayer of the Faithful. They play an important role as clear and evenly paced reading is important to enabling everyone in attendance to hear and reflect on the message. Adequate preparation (practice) ahead of time is critical, and lector workbooks are provided to assist with the pronunciation of foreign names and lands as well as to provide helpful historical context.
